Taking Action on Jobs, Taxes, & Benefits There is a serious difference of opinion on what creates jobs, money or customers? If today's businesses can cut back on employees enough so that they don't have to raise prices to meet expenses, then they can stay in a smaller, almost shrunken business for a long time. There are those who say that only some breakthrough new technology will cause new business investment, new jobs, new money in worker's pockets, and, therefore, new profits. We are the majority. We can have a real impact. The steps can be taken right here. 1. Understand the interconnected features of the economy so that we can decide whether to vote for tax cuts or for health benefits and education. This is both economics and philosophy. We can keep up here. (link to What's the Problem?) 2. Understand where your elected representatives stand on the specifics of these issues and who gives them money. (link to vote-smart.org) 3. Questions to ask our representatives, candidates for office, and the political parties that want our money and our votes. How much do they know and how willing are they to give us the details about where they stand and why? Ask your elected representatives any of these Life Issue questions: What causes a business to buy equipment and invest in research and development? What advice do you give to someone who has been laid off after 20 years on a job and is 45 years old with a family? What should she or he do? Are health benefits a business issue or a shared societal issue? Specifically what are the steps that would put your view into practice? To send a message to your representatives, click here. You can use these questions to start exchanging ideas: Since any of us can get sick at any time, if we can't get a job with secure health benefits, what plan would be best for everyone? What services do we get from government that we think we should have to buy from private, profit-making companies? Would we save money? Be guaranteed service, if they were sold or went out of business? Since most of us own or work for small businesses, should they be required to pay for health care and pensions? If they can't, how can employees plan for their future needs? 5. If you need to register to vote, click here. (link vote.net) 6. When you know which party, which activist organizations and which individuals represent your views, join them or support their efforts by sending $5 or more.ò Click here for a list of our affiliates.
